M K Kamalam

MK Kamalam was born in 1899 as daughter of  Mangaattuveetil Kochupilla Panicker and Karthyayani at Kumarakom in Kottayam.

Initially took classes from her own father, who was a teacher for both music and theatre. Later from Thomas Punnan, Narayanan Bhagawathar, Ochira Raman Bhagawathar, Kottaram Sankunni Nair. She started acting in dramas at the age of 7.

In 1938 , at the age of 15, she acted & sang for the film “Balan”. The first song was “jagadeeswara jaya jaya”. She got married in 1924 to Damodaran Vaidyar and has 3 daughters – Radha, Meera and Indulekha.  

Tailpiece : Recently there was a reference about this artist the in the book “Murivukal” written by Soorya Krishnamoorthy. She was now in utter poverty and toil. When asked whether she has got any dreams left, he reply was “I wish to get meals 3 times”. She died on April 10, 2010.
